Responding rapidly to load changes

The various non-linear loads present in today’s power networks – such as variable-speed drives, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems, and rectifiers – can easily result in poor power quality and severe process-related problems, reducing the service life of equipment and generating unwanted downtime.

By acting as a controlled current source and providing the optimum current waveform, Merus A-Series shunt active filters mitigate these problems and provide a high standard of dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic filtering. This can be very useful for a wide variety of users, from computer and data centres, automotive manufacturing plants, and water treatment plants to oil and gas pumping stations, paper mills, and wind and solar power farms.

Making distributed power more grid-friendly

Merus Power’ M-Series statcom dynamic compensation technology has been developed to provide a reliable grid connection solution for distributed power generation customers.

The need for reactive power compensation systems capable of guaranteeing good dynamic performance and response within a given cycle time has increased tremendously in recent years with the growth in the number of solar power, wind farms, and distributed power sites in operation and under development. Maintaining the stability and reliability of transmission grids has become a growing challenge for grid operators in the face of this development.

The innovative design and engineering of the Merus M-statcom system family enables wind farms and other renewable energy generators to meet the grid code requirements set by the authorities and transmission companies and ensure that their point-of-grid connections function as required.

Merus’ Modular Controller Concept (MCC ) means that customised solutions based on proven building blocks can be supplied to control parameters such as power factor, voltage output, and low-voltage ride-through requirements. As a result, M-Series statcoms can be easily tailored to customer-specific requirements and supplied as containerised, fully factorytested solutions. Where needed, systems can be added in parallel to cover power ranges extending up to hundreds of MVars; hybrid solutions, partially based on passive components, can also be supplied.

Merus Power’s statcoms also have a lot to offer industry in terms of reactive power compensation and harmonic filtering and reducing downtime and operating costs and helping key processes function effectively. Merus offers a range of engineering services and solutions for arc furnaces and rolling mills in the steel industry and applications in other energy-intensive industries that face difficult and fluctuating loads.

System integration

Merus Power’s expertise also extends to reactive power compensation engineering, procurement, and project management and integration services based on the company’s own products and complimentary third-party products and services if required. Depending on customer requirements, Merus Power can supply the core technology needed in a project, while another partner handles turnkey responsibilities.

System integration for systems such as SVCs (Static Var Compensators) ranges from engineering and procurement to partial deliveries and commissioning to turnkey project management. Static Var Compensators can be engineered for arc furnaces and rolling mills and reactive power compensation and harmonic filtering for conventional applications, for example.

Merus Power’s engineering team also offers system review and consulting services for wind farms focused on compliance with grid codes and grid connection criteria and helping customers identify and implement the optimal solutions for their needs.
