As part of its commitment to constantly push the envelope, FluidHouse has now started work on switching to Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) technology at all levels of its operations.
FluidHouse very much believes that this is the way to go, as there is a growing wave of interest in being able to gain access to all aspects of plant information – anywhere and at any time. While this can be achieved today, it calls for many different layers of integration and typically brings a lot of system complication. As a universal communication protocol, IPv6 offers the potential for changing all of this.
Leading the transition
The current focus of FluidHouse’s company-wide transition to IPv6 is concentrated on the use and implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) using 6LoWPAN in the specialised test area and state-of-the-art monitoring system at the company’s main site in Jyväskylä.
As part of this, FluidHouse is participating in the EU’s eSONIA (Embedded Service-Oriented Monitoring, Diagnostic and Control, www.esonia.eu) project funded by the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.
Leveraging its involvement with eSONIA , FluidHouse has started implementing IPv6 controllers that can pre-process information directly from field devices, sensors, and transmitters. This information is then projected as a series of Web services that can be subsequently accessed by any third-party software or system.
FluidHouse believes that this approach will bridge the gap that often continues to exist today between IT and plant operations and open up the opportunity for seamlessly using modern monitoring systems for a much wider group of people.
FluidHouse uses its test area to test the performance and design specifications of its own products and those of its customers, and the new 6LoWPAN system will make it possible to test the reliability of both IPv6-based and wireless devices in the industrial field.
