Users include telecommunications operators, which have employed it as a super middleware solution, and enterprises that use it to enforce SLAs in corporate IT networks. The platform is also now making increasing inroads into online, high-granularity energy, CO2 emission, and environmental metering.
Helping reduce people’s carbon footprint
Giving people access to precise, real-time data on energy consumption is seen by BaseN as an important way of helping mitigate climate change, as this data can increase energy awareness and encourage energy saving. It also lies at the heart of the Smart Grid of the future.
BaseN has developed the Basen Environmental Awareness Technologies (BEAT) toolbox as an integral part of the BaseN Platform to measure energy, gas, and water consumption and enable companies and consumers to monitor their energy consumption via real-time, web-based visualisations.
With its grid architecture, BEAT offers a fast and cost-effective service for conducting large-scale energy and environmental measurements. Substantial economies of scale can be achieved in rolling out and maintaining a service by using BEAT.
Two very tangible examples of what BaseN technology can offer are a new sustainable urban living concept being developed by Skanska, Fortum, and ABB; and the Vattenfall Energy Family of the Year competition.
As part of the sustainable urban living project, an energy-efficient apartment block will be built in Greater Helsinki in 2011 incorporating a BaseN real-time system for monitoring electricity, water, and heating usage. Designed to support new-generation Smart Grid technology, the system will enable users to monitor their energy usage very closely and will give them the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by proactively changing how much energy they use and what they use it on.
Basen measurement technology is also being used by Vattenfall in its Energy Family of the Year Competition to encourage households to become more energy-efficient by monitoring their electricity consumption in real time. The results speak for themselves, as participants have succeeded in achieving significantly higher savings than originally projected, typically more than 20%, translating into hundreds of euros a year, as well as lower emissions.
